blendED 2018 was held October 10-12 in Edmonton and highlighted how to apply flexible learning strategies in various learning spaces. It was the 4th annual blendED Symposium with participants from throughout Canada.
The pre-symposium was a Leadership afternoon that focused on strategies and skills that demonstrate teachers have met the Competencies in the new Teaching Quality Standard (TQS), which will be implemented in September, 2019. Over 40 school and jurisdiction leaders co-created documents that they can use when supervising or evaluation their online and blended teachers under the new TQS.
The 2 day Symposium had over 40 sessions that were related to either Primarily Online teaching and learning OR Primarily Blended teaching and learning. Links to the curated notes are above. Delegates were welcomed to they Symposium by Dr. Curtis Clark, Deputy Minister of Education and Daylene Lauman, Online Learning Advisor, Alberta Education. The opening keynote was from Will Richardson who challenged us to explore different ways that students learn and different definitions of education.
In addition to the sessions, delegates could chose between two featured speakers; Marcia Kish on blended learning, or Darren Cannell on online learning. The feedback on the event was fantastic and delegates look forward to blendED 2019 so they can continue to learn, connect and network.

Online Learning Featured Speaker
Darren Cannell developed the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School, the largest and most successful cyber school in Saskatchewan, for 15 years from its inception. This work gave him a perspective on the challenges and successes of such a venture. The possibilities and scope of a well-developed program has the ability, and should, alter education. The fear, cost, and frustration of this alteration make the change a challenge but the rewards can be inspiring. Since retiring he has been exploring the use of online learning in a business model to fill the educational gaps which are appearing in the modern education system as the government support and available money is becoming tight. The desire to do individualized instruction in a standardized testing model of education does not allow the children to follow their passion and hence leaves a lot of students struggling in today's schools. He is an innovative educator with over 30 years experience |
